Yeshitso School
About three years ago, the teacher of Yeshitso School had to leave to look for a different job; students stopped attending classes and the school building subsequently fell into ruin, as the villagers simply did not have money to keep this school in operation. In 2007, Jamyang, a monk from Yeshitso Village, asked for TVP’s help to rebuild the school. While it was very hard to say no, TVP simply could not take on more projects at the time, given our limited resources. Instead TVP advised and guided the villagers to seek support from the local government for help.
Two years later, the villagers prevailed and surprised TVP! The local government had built a new primary school that accommodates about 40 students. However, the villagers are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the school and once again asked for TVP’s support. Now that the villagers have shown their own commitment and children have the opportunity to learn, TVP could not say ‘no’ this time. The locals will pay a stipend for one teacher and TVP agreed to help provide another teacher and school supplies. Each teacher would normally cost about $150-$200 per month in this particular area. However, the school is so remote that no qualified teacher would stay unless they receive a little above market rate. To date, 35 students (age 7-14) have registered and are very excited to go back to school.
Yeshitso School is located in a remote village in Dagyab (close to where Tseyang grew-up). Today this region falls in Chamdo Prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region and the area is very poor and not open to tourists. Yeshitso village has about 90 households and most of them are subsistence farmers. TVP is one of only two NGOs working in the area and has already provided a business loan, in 2008, for a convenience store that is operated by a nearby nunnery with 390 nuns. TVP will need your help in order to provide a teacher and school supplies for the children of Yeshitso School. The cost of this project is $4,050 annually or $340 monthly. Click here to donate.
