November 2007: As the cold Tibetan winter approaches children at Pa Lhakang Monastic School in Kham receives winter clothing donated by TVP. The winter Chupa is the traditional Tibetan long robe, warm and woolen. TVP is ordering Chupas that will be made at a local Tibetan tailor shop. This strategy ensures that donated funds will stay in the Tibetan business community and support local Tibetan’s employment.

The Pa Lhakang Monastic School is located in the Tibetan town of Tagong, a traditional region of Kham. Tibetan Monk, Sonam Dargyal (“Apo”) started the school in 2006. For Sonam, The school is part of his Bodhisattva practice of caring for disadvantaged children with a compassionate heart. Many of these young children wish to become monks and sustaining monk hood is often a challenge given the political climate and rapidly changing socio-economics of Tibet. Thupten is teaching and preserving the Buddhist tradition which allows children to benefit from receiving basic education which will allow them to learn trade skills and pursue monastic training.

In July 2007, Conscious Journeys volunteers of Tibetan Village Project provided 10 new beds, 44 sets of summer clothing and shoes, and 30 blankets. Team members spent time with children preparing meals, teaching art and English, and providing unconditional love. TVP continues to support operation of the school when funding allows.

If you interested in meeting and providing assistance to these children you can join Conscious Journeys program in each summer. To learn more about this and other programs, visit www.consciousjourneys.org.Your support makes it possible for TVP to continue to care for more than 1,200 school children annually and assist in developing income generation programs for villagers to become more self-sufficient.
