The Lhasa Kungshon Language School
A
part of the Tibetan Village Projects (TVP) effort to promote economic self-sufficiency
in Tibet, we partner with Lhasa Kungshon Language School to provide vocational
training and educational programs in Tibet.
The Lhasa Kungshon Language
School (LKLS) was founded in 1988 by Mr. Lhobsang Pandan. Over the past 13 years,
the school has trained 15,000 part-time language students in English, Tibetan,
Chinese, French, Japanese and German, 700 vocational students and 3,000 computer-science
students. The school has given 1,200 scholarships to students with disabilities
and financial difficulties.
LKLS
also provides vocational training in hotel and restaurant services and teacher
training for rural village schools and other disadvantaged groups. Program development
is ongoing with plans to expand the language education and job skill training
programs. Students pay only 35% of tuition costs. Tuition fees are supplemented
with donor contributions and funds raised through the selling
of hand-woven Tibetan wool rugs. The rug business employs local Tibetans (mostly
women) in traditional crafts, while the funds raised benefit young adults with
job skill improvements and enhanced employment opportunities. Please contact
Colette to learn more about this program.
